I started with a Delta lathe, and it was ok. But I just bought this lathe and it is a whole different experience---big, quiet, DC motor with infinitely variable speed---a tool that you kind of work up to. Lathe work is the most direct in the shop--tool to wood to finished product in a couple of hours for some things. Very appealing. The real deal is keeping the tools sharp. I like closed forms achieved by creative glueups and big open vase or platter forms.
The bench it sits on was given to me by the family of the woman next door, Mrs. Voss, after she died. They probably figured I had most of the tools in it anyway from doing so many projects for her, plus I would actually use it in the tradition of her grandfather.

This is a view of the curved porch addition to our house on Lake Monona in Madison. All of my friends, Bill, Kevin, Carl, Fuzzy, worked on the inside of the house for the former owners. It was a big project in the local woodworking community and I remember, for instance, seeing the staircase go together in Kevin's shop and the cabinets in Bill's. This and that and all of the sudden Ellen and I own it, the only problem being that the whole outside had to be redone right back to the studs. It's been long enough that I've forgotten the blood, sweat, and tears and now it's just a nice place to live, especially the porch.
